A MIGHTY FINE CUP OF [BLOCK ISLAND] COFFEE
We’ve heard rumors that there are some folks out there who can start their mornings without coffee. And to these people, we commend you. However, the rest of us need a cup or 6 just to get through the day. Whether it’s your usual home brew or a daily stop at your preferred coffee joint, we just can’t wait to get that caffeine fix.
So, what are your options if you’re heading out to Block Island? A lot more than you might think! Don’t expect the usual chain places, either. The island has enough home-grown choices for a mighty fine cup of coffee (and maybe some delicious treats, as well).
YEAR-ROUND PICK-ME UP
If you’re heading to New Shoreham during the off season and are concerned that there might not be many places open, fear not my friend! Along with the usual coffee choices, The Cracked Mug (33 Ocean Ave) also offers, smoothies, fresh-pressed juices, and sandwiches with plant-based options. If you’re looking for something a little closer to the ferry, Odd Fellows Café (232 Water St) is there for you. This vibrant café serves a delicious, bold dark roast and food that is hard to beat.
SEASONAL BUZZ
Of course, the warmer months are when the action on the island starts picking up and more places open their doors for all your refreshment needs! While you’re enjoying a cold brew at Aldo’s Bakery (130 Weldon’s Way) be sure to check out their pastries, breads, and home-made ice cream. If you’re staying at the National Hotel, Dune & Bluff’s (34 Water St) can be found on the ground floor. Get your morning Americano and come back when it gets warmer for their world-class gelato.
If you’re interested in some breakfast to go with your coffee, you’re in luck. Whether you prefer butter, cream cheese, lox or sausage & eggs, Old Post Office Bagel Shop (123 Corn Neck Rd) will meet your bagels needs! Persephone’s Kitchen (235 Dodge St) offers a delicious daily frittata, various fancy toast options as well as sweet & savory breakfast bowls.
What goes better with a coffee than a donut? In a food truck over on the Great Salt Pond, you can find a 50+ year Block Island institution: Payne’s Donuts (1 Ocean Ave). People say that a Payne’s donut is reason enough to make a trip to the island and these treats have even inspired artwork. With reviews like that, who can resist?
BLOCK ISLAND BEANS
Did you know Block Island has its own coffee roaster? Block Island Coffee (blockislandcoffee.com) has a variety of brews and flavors for any java drinker’s palate. Their coffee can be found at Odd Fellows Café and the Block Island Farmers Market so make sure you grab a bag to bring home. Can’t get to the Island right now? They have an online store!
Most of these businesses offer both indoor and outdoor seating. Be sure to check their websites and social channels for up-to-date hours and specials. And, of course, while you’re making your way over on the ferry, be sure you stop by our concession stand for a cup. You know, just to start things off right. Sail Away…
